Journey with me into the ancient bamboo forests of the Shunan Bamboo Sea in Sichuan, China. As night falls, the forest comes alive with the distinctive chorus of the Emei Music Frog (*Nidirana daunchina*), a species renowned for its remarkably rhythmic, tonal calls and its unique mud nest building behaviour.

This recording is an authentic two hour excerpt from a continuous recording lasting more than twenty four hours. To capture the frogs without human disturbance, I deployed an autonomous drop rig deep within the bamboo forest and left it recording throughout the night. What you hear is a genuine moment from that long recording.

[The Concept & Disclaimer]

As a field recordist, my goal is to document the raw, unfiltered acoustic ecology of remote natural environments.

A quick note: the visual for this video is a static, cinematic representation of the bamboo forest rather than live wildlife footage. I am an audio first creator, and my primary focus here is a deep listening experience. By leaving an autonomous recording system in the forest for more than twenty four hours, I was able to capture the frogs behaving naturally without my presence influencing their activity.

[The Audio Experience]

🎧 Headphones highly recommended!

The Emei Music Frog produces one of the most distinctive choruses I have encountered during my years of field recording. Rather than long melodic calls, the chorus is built from rhythmic, tonal pulses that almost resemble the repeated plucking of tiny stringed instruments. Individuals answer one another from different directions, creating a rich acoustic texture that slowly evolves throughout the recording.

There are no loops, no AI generated audio, no added ambience. This is an authentic excerpt from a continuous field recording, captured in the bamboo forest.

Close your eyes, let the natural acoustics of the Shunan Bamboo Sea surround you, and enjoy this remarkable chorus.

[About the Species]

The Emei Music Frog (*Nidirana daunchina*) is native to southwestern China, where it inhabits forest wetlands and quiet mountain valleys. During the breeding season, males construct mud nests from which they call to attract females. Their highly structured vocalizations and unusual breeding behaviour have made this species an important subject of bioacoustic and behavioural research.
