I took 9 different microphone setups into the field around Penang, Malaysia to hear how they actually compare when recording the same environments.

This is not a laboratory test or a technical measurement session. The goal was to compare the **sound, character and stereo image** of each microphone in real-world field recording situations.

I used these microphones:

• Schoeps CCM 41
• Sennheiser MKH 8090
• Immersive Soundscapes Earsight Nano
• LOM mikroUši
• FEL Clippy EM272
• Sonorous Objects SO.103
• Immersive Soundscapes Earsight Thumb
• Immersive Soundscapes Earsight V2
• Sony PCM-D100

The recordings cover a variety of environments and sources around Penang, including Chew Jetty, a wet market, forest ambience, sea waves, a motorcycle pass-by, a cityscape with the call to prayer, a quiet botanical garden, distant city sirens and various studio objects.

Each microphone was recorded simultaneously where possible, using different recorders and stereo configurations depending on the rig. No EQ, compression or other processing was applied.

The idea was not to find one "best" microphone, but to find out which microphones I personally preferred for different recording situations.

Recorded in Penang, Malaysia.
