I took 9 different microphone setups into the field around Penang, Malaysia to hear how they actually compare when recording the same environments. This is not a laboratory test or a technical measurement session. The goal was to compare the **sound, character and stereo image** of each microphone in real-world field recording situations. I used these microphones: • Schoeps CCM 41 • Sennheiser MKH 8090 • Immersive Soundscapes Earsight Nano • LOM mikroUši • FEL Clippy EM272 • Sonorous Objects SO.103 • Immersive Soundscapes Earsight Thumb • Immersive Soundscapes Earsight V2 • Sony PCM-D100 The recordings cover a variety of environments and sources around Penang, including Chew Jetty, a wet market, forest ambience, sea waves, a motorcycle pass-by, a cityscape with the call to prayer, a quiet botanical garden, distant city sirens and various studio objects. Each microphone was recorded simultaneously where possible, using different recorders and stereo configurations depending on the rig.
