Journal Entry: Day 89

Gerik, Perak, Malaysia,

Yesterday was one of the highlights of my 1-year stay in Malaysia.
We went inside the forest reserve Belum-Temenggor, one of the oldest if not the oldest rainforest in the world. Many animal species live there. and it is a dream place to install sound recorders.
We went by boat from the Banding island, navigating the Temenggor lake. There was my friend Haziq, and the 2 guides Ipat and Ali.
I had 3 recorders ready with external microphones, and even a fourth one as a backup.

This was a marvelous trip in this immense natural reserve.
We went to 2 different locations that have salt licks, these are precious nutrients that are available in the ground or rocks for a wide array of animals. Therefore the animals come to these places, to get their nutrients, usually at dusk or dawn. The first salt lick we went to is huge and is known to have lots of elephants wandering around. We placed 2 recorders, one closer to the salt lick, and one a little further near the lake. The second site we went has a very small salt lick. It is at the root of a tree, we, therefore, placed a recorder just on top of it in the tree. This will make the perfect spot to catch animal sounds from close hopefully.

I am a little worried that anything can happen to the gear, but it is part of the game. A risk I am willing to take. We leave the recorders for 2 entire days (48 hours) and will take them back Wednesday (tomorrow).
Then Tomorrow I will leave my stay in Gerik and go on my way to KL (Kuala Lumpur) for me to be ready for my exit to Malaysia. I will probably pass by Taiping.
